This textbook is the most concise and readable invertebrates book in terms of detail and pedagogy (other texts do not offer boxed readings, a second color, end of chapter questions, or pronunciation guides). All phyla of invertebrates are covered (comprehensive) with an emphasis on unifying characteristics of each group.

In college, there are two kinds of textbooks: the ones that are worth buying and the ones that aren't. Pechenik's book on Invertebrates belongs to the former. I had the misfortune of being enrolled this semester in a Taxonomy class where the professor is a huge advocate of independent learning. This book offers detailed but not overwhelming information about the different phyla and puts emphasis on functional morphology which has helped me through out our practical examinations.
