Spyro: Year of the Dragon is destined to be the last of Insomniac's adventures with their diminuitive purple dragon, so it's rather fitting that it arrives when the little guy's symbol has come around in the zodiac once again. What may strike some of his followers as unusual, though, is how crowded the Spyro spotlight has become. It's still his game, naturally, with all that signifies - fine 3D graphics, a pleasantly cartoonish style of design, and plenty of goofy voice acting - but Year of the Dragon has five times the tale to tell now. It's quite a leap, and it'll be interesting to see if it works, but so far, it's great fun to play with the suddenly dominant supporting cast.

See, the plot of Year of the Dragon is nothing too surprising - an evil sorceress has stolen the baby dragon eggs, and Spyro is the only dragon small enough to go down the rabbit hole into her Rhynoc-ruled empire. Just as you rescued the elder dragons in the first Spyro, now you have to rescue the young ones. But once you get to exploring the sorceress' Forgotten World, you find four more characters who want a piece of her as well. At least thirty percent of the game will be played in these four different personas, each of whom presents a very different game.

Pardon me if I go a bit strange when I run these off, because you have to admit they're a little goofy - aside from Spyro and Sparx, you'll also play as Sheila the Kangaroo, Sergeant Byrd the flying penguin, Bentley the Yeti, and Agent 9, the..um..space monkey. He's not exactly from space, actually having been raised in a lab by the Professor from Spyro 2, but he's done up in a mohawked helmet like a refugee from a 50s Martian-invader movie, and his answer to fiery breath is a goofy-looking blaster pistol. Bit of a departure from the game's usual hero, yes?

Well, I dunno - is that any more or less weird than a purple kid dragon? A question for the ages. I figure my disbelief is suspended high enough, though, and regardless of how they look, the new characters bring all kinds of different gameplay. Sheila is perhaps the most like Spyro, although she swaps his high-speed dash for extra jumping ability. She has different types of double jumps that let her hop up cliffs and clear extra-wide gaps. Sergeant Byrd is the first to depart significantly from the standard gameplay - having been raised by hummingbirds, he can fly with his stubby wings, and being of a staunchly military bearing, he can take out enemies with his twin rocket launchers (yes, rocket launchers). He can also pick stuff up with his flippers, which makes for some fun puzzles, like one which requires you to drop sixteen-ton weights on a series of switches. Bentley is the slowest of the lot, but his great strength and massive club come in handy when you need to smash something. He can break through boulders or crack open extra-strong treasure chests, and his club-spin move reflects projectiles back at your enemies. And then there's the Agent, who reminds me of Jet Force Gemini, albeit much lighter in terms of depth. The key to success with him is mastering his sniper mode, which lets you zoom in on targets and pick them off carefully.

As if that's not enough to give the game some variety, it's loaded down with more mini-games than either of the previous Spyros, some of which have a pretty remarkable degree of depth to them. The skateboarding game isn't quite Tony Hawk, but there's a series of trick challenges to work your way through that helps back up the simple gameplay. The thief chase, returning from the previous game, is still a nice twitchy test of reflexes and guesswork. There's a flight racing mode that challenges you to take on a field of quick opponents, or tests your precision flying skills by seeing how many pickup items you can grab and enemies you can down. I spent the most time fooling around in the skatepark, but perhaps the best game I found was an arcade-style 3D sub hunt, where you have to zip around a series of tunnels and underwater chambers trying to draw a bead on enemy submarines and blast them with your torpedos.

One more mini-game deserves an asterisk, because I couldn't find it in the preview version of the game, although I wanted to play it more than any of them - evidently there's a set of four vertical shooter levels starring Sparx, the little mosquito that flitters around showing how many hits Spyro can still take. Though I couldn't test it, it sounds like a kick, with rapid-fire guns and powerups like smart bombs and homing missiles.

All this focus on mini-games and side characters, and it's easy to forget that Spyro's still supposed to be the hero. There's not a whole lot new to be said about him, though, which is probably exactly why Insomniac has added all the new characters and gameplay modes. He can swim now, and there are additions in the way of sub-tasks and goals in each level (including fun stuff like turret guns and gimmick boss encounters), but basically he's up to the same old tricks - fly, glide, run, charge, headbutt, flamethrow, massacre unsuspecting sheep, and all that other good stuff.

Spyro has always been a name synonymous with quality graphics and gameplay, though, and that's as true now as it always has been. The game world is larger than ever, with 37 total levels - sixteen Spyro levels, eight alternate-character levels, four speedway levels, four bosses, four of the vertical-scrolling Sparx levels, and one 'super-bonus round' (which sure sounds cool). The main levels are reportedly anywhere from half again to twice as large as those in Spyro 2, and they're broken up by both the mini-game sequences and an array of main bosses and intra-level mini-bosses. Some of the boss encounters are fairly basic, but others are quite innovative - one encounter, for example, demands that you pilot a speedboat against a gigantic shark-like sub. It has its own set of controls, which are tuned just fine, and the goals are entirely unlike those in a normal boss encounter. It's a great change of pace, which now that I think about it is a good way to characterize the game as a whole. It's always changing pace, which is its strongest asset - it's hard to get bored when you're constantly being presented with new and different things to do.

The cartoon-fantasy graphics are as sharp and smooth as ever, moving at an excellent framerate even during high-speed chase sequences. Effects like sparks, lighting, and smoke help spruce up the mostly flat or Gouraud-shaded polygons; a steam breath effect in icebound levels is very nicely done. Spyro's supporting cast design remains..uhm..a little odd, but not in an unwelcome way. The Rhynoc enemies wear a vast array of themed costumes depending on what level they're menacing - in the alpine level populated by oppressed sheep, they wear lederhosen - and all of the bit players that present puzzles and sub-tasks have the series' trademark goofy voice acting. My personal favorite at this point would be the aforementioned sheep, with the expected Looney Tunes-style Swiss accents.

Dragons of atlantis heirs of the dragon pc

Insomniac, as I said, is bidding goodbye to Spyro after this game, in the same way that Naughty Dog has given Crash Bandicoot his quiet farewell. They'll presumably be moving onto new and better things with PlayStation2. I guess it's funny that the dragon's big sendoff takes place in a game where he relinquishes so much of his starring role, but I don't suppose he minds that much - he's always been a pretty low-key sort. And no matter what the game means in a larger sense, it should still be as good a game as the Spyros have always been.

Sure, we just had a sequel to the magical and graphically stunning Spyro, but Sony sees the success of Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage as a reason to celebrate, and what better way to do that than with a brand new Spyro. This third game adds a lot of new features on the proven gameplay, including all-new playable characters.

The story of Spyro 3 (which isn't its official name, but might as well be for all concerned) once again concerns mythic beings tormenting Spyro and his friends. An evil Sorceress has kidnapped all the eggs from Dragon World, and Spyro has been dispatched to save them.

Not quite thrilling stuff, but it's the cartoony magic of Spyro that will sell this game. 30 stages are being built into Spyro: Year of the Dragon

, which is once again being designed by Insomniac Games (no word yet on whether Stewart Copeland is returning for the soundtrack yet). The stages boast a lot more diversity this time out, as Spyro will compete in minigames of boxing, skateboarding, shooting, and more. He will also be able to pilot submarines, drive a tank, ride a speedboat, and shoot from a cannon.

Another gimmick for Spyro 2 is a host of new playable characters. For the first time, gamers can switch out from Spyro and explore worlds too treacherous for Spyro himself. One that we played as was a bouncing Kangaroo, and another was a caveman with an ice club so huge it has to be transparent just so players can look through it to see what's in front of them. These new friends add a lot of different gameplay for Spyro, although all of the classic stages (such as soaring through hoops) is still in there.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon looks great, but we can't leave alone without saying that yes, this is a quick cash-in on a franchise before the system drops out from under it. The game is being hurried for a November launch date, less than a year after the last one. But it does play like Spyro should, and all of the new characters have the potential to add depth (when we tested it on the show floor of E3, we didn't see too much going on with the newbies, although it was fun to play as a kangaroo). It seems like this is implementation of ideas that just didn't make it to Spyro 2, and while the third game may be a little too soon to be tastefully released, it should still be well-received on its own merits, and we're looking forward to seeing a few more surprises when we get this game in the office sometime after the show.
