Sir MMPD Radick Run Notes:
This is my first recorded run for Final Fantasy VIII, this is mainly so I could get an idea of how I could improve to the point I could submit a speed run in the future, this is not a speed run of any kind. I would not suggest watching these videos unless your extremely bored or just want to watch the plot line.
The Total time for all the clips is an unintended 24 hours 26 minutes and 51 seconds
The date I finished was January 30th 2005 or so.
The main strategy I used in this was to level up early and to keep a steady pace, which seems not to have worked too well. My Goal for this was to see mainly how i would do playing semi-normally, instead of going low level throught the game.
I did not use any cheats or glitches for this, but I did stop many times and pause the game. You will notice where I stopped by the music changing all of a sudden, or by the save menu all of a sudden graying out, take note of the clock however it is always the same time as I left off in the game, so there was no harm. One of the reasons I stopped so frequently was because I wanted to make sure that I did not get too big of a fraps recording, as the bigger the recording the harder it is for the audio to stay in sync, and the second was to make sure I was on track.
Please note: I did make a mistake at Edeas house I forgot to record it, I didn't notice this until I had already saved the game so it was too late to fix it.
So judging by the clock add 6 minutes onto the time and it should be correct, because all it was just dialogue.
I also did not record going into the shumi tribe's village once to draw an ultima.
Add 1 minute.
I realize RPG runs are a bit odd and boring for the most part, not nearly as popular as any other type of recordings, because of the fact there is not much action and incredible length, this was done just for fun to see what my time would be, I have therefore put the plotline split up relatively carefully so you may view whatever you want.
Towards the end of the run, I noticed I was far too low in levels to defeat the end boss, so I went and leveled up for 2 hours right before the end.
This for the most part paid off at the end despite the huge amount of time I wasted.
You will notice on a few of these videos the audio is out of sync, this unfortunately was unavoidable.
Thankfully the audio is mostly out of sync on just the leveling up videos, so not much harm done.
General Mistakes:
1. I messed with the menu far too many times, where I could have just left it alone.
2. I did not use the shortcuts on the menus 90% of the time to switch things, which was a major waste of time.
3. I only figured out how to use GF boost half way through the game. In Every one of my previous games I could never figure it out.
4. I should have put Zell on Auto Duel, I did extremely poorly with the combinations because I use a keyboard. Next time around I will get a controller that works hopefully.
5. During Assassinate the sorceress, in the tunnels I got confused a few times on which direction to go.
6. I put the lift in the Galabadia Prison in the wrong place.
7. I missed the first weapons magazine.
8. I didn't notice some of my characters were far behind in levels till near the end.
9. I should have went to rescue Renoa earlier from the sorceress memorial.
10. I went in search of parts to get the GF Doom Train during the leveling, then abandoned the course half way through going for the Lion Heart instead.
11. After the Lion Heart I started to go gather parts for the rest of the weapons, then decided against it after another battle for getting adamantine.
12. I mistakenly ran into the big Cactus, which I was not prepared to battle. I wasted 30 minutes. At least I gained a GF out of it.
13. I considered going to level up on the island closest to Hell, but changed my mind so it took a min or two to go somewhere else.
14. I should have skipped getting Bahamaut, I never used him but once.
